GIY & SAP Landscapes Donate 500 Trees for 1916 Centenary

Planting Trees with an Orchard in an Hour pack

On November 26th 2016 100 orchards were planted simultaneously across the country to mark Ireland’s 1916 Centenary celebrations. GIY’s Community Manager Karen O’Donohoe described the ‘Orchard in an Hour’ project as “an edible lasting legacy during the 1916 centenary celebrations”.

GIY teamed up with SAP Landscapes to donate ‘Orchard in an Hour’ packs to Schools, community groups, and workplaces across the country. The free packs contained a selection of 5 apple, pear, and plum trees, and were supplied to the first 100 communities who registered to participate on www.giyinternational.org.

Paul Giles, Commercial Director of SAP Landscapes Ltd said, “Having spent 40 years creating and sustaining landscapes, we are delighted to be able to mark this milestone in partnership with GIY. Society has become increasingly detached from our natural environment and ‘Orchard in an Hour’ is a great initiative to help root the value of nature back into our daily lives”.
According to Karen O’Donohoe the event epitomises the core values of GIY: “making food growing fun, accessible and inspirational.” Karen explained that some of the key issues related to the project include health, the environment, and community development.

SAP Landscapes and GIY hope the involvement of community groups in urban and rural locations nationwide will create a positive legacy of food growing and community partnerships for the next 100 years.
